1) On the Island

 

Lokobe National Park

The excursion begins with a land transfer to the fishing village of Ambatozavavy, located in the south-east of Nosy Be. From there, you will board a traditional wooden canoe to reach Lokobe National Park, gliding peacefully along the mangroves.
 

Accompanied by a local guide, you will set off to explore one of the island’s last remaining primary forests. As you follow a nature trail with occasionally uneven terrain, you may encounter Nosy Be’s famous lemurs — including both nocturnal and diurnal species — as well as a wide variety of reptiles, chameleons, boas, insects, and tropical birds.

Lemuria Land

 

An accessible experience to discover the nature and history of Nosy Be at your own pace.

 

Located near Hell-Ville (Andoany), Lemuria Land is a private nature and botanical reserve offering an immersive insight into Madagascar’s iconic flora and fauna. The well-maintained, easy-to-follow trails allow visitors to explore the site comfortably and at their leisure.

 

During a guided visit, you will encounter several species of lemurs — some of which roam freely within the park — as well as chameleons, giant tortoises, crocodiles, snakes, and tropical birds. The gardens are home to lush vegetation, including rare plants, palm trees, and century-old ylang-ylang trees.

 

The visit also includes a small museum and a former ylang-ylang distillery, offering a deeper understanding of the traditional production of essential oils, which is closely linked to the history of Nosy Be.

 

Mont Passot

2) Beyond the island

 

Nosy Iranja

 

An iconic excursion set in exceptional natural surroundings.

 

Often considered one of the most beautiful islands in the region, Nosy Iranja lies approximately 48 kilometres from Nosy Be, with a journey time of around 1½ to 2 hours by boat.

 

The island consists of two parts connected by a pristine white sandbank, visible at low tide and partially submerged at high tide. This unique natural phenomenon creates a spectacular setting and invites you to swim in crystal-clear, turquoise waters.

 

Iranja is said to take its name from a Sakalava princess. A local legend also tells the story of two islands united by love, symbolised by the sandbank that links them.

 

For those who wish, a short walk leads to the metal lighthouse located at the island’s highest point, dating back to the early 20th century and often attributed to Gustave Eiffel’s workshops.

 

The crossing also offers the opportunity to admire the wild north-western coastline of Madagascar, dotted with long, unspoilt beaches.

 

A local lunch is included during the excursion.

 

Nosy Komba

 

An immersion in the island’s authentic charm.

 

Located around a 30-minute boat ride from Nosy Be, Nosy Komba is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Its volcanic landscape, covered in lush vegetation, gives it a preserved and authentic character.

 

The excursion takes you to a small park where you can observe lemurs and a few tortoises, before heading to the main village of Ampangorina and its craft market. Wooden carvings, woven mats, miniature traditional canoes, and local paintings showcase the craftsmanship of the island’s inhabitants.

Nosy Tanikely

Nosy Tanikely is a protected marine nature reserve, renowned for the richness of its seabed. Accessible by boat from Nosy Be, the island offers a preserved environment ideal for discovering marine life.

 

Snorkelling allows you to observe coral reefs, colourful tropical fish, and, depending on conditions, sea turtles in clear, shallow waters. A walk around the island completes this nature-filled experience.

Nosy Sakatia
 

A pristine island nestled between sea and nature.

 

Located around a 20-minute boat ride from Nosy Be, Nosy Sakatia — often nicknamed “the orchid island” — charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and authentic character. Some say that its silhouette, when viewed from the sea, resembles that of a turtle.

 

The island is particularly known for its seagrass beds, where green turtles are regularly spotted, offering excellent snorkelling conditions in a preserved natural environment. It is also home to local flora, including vanilla and orchids, which can be seen depending on the season.

 

 

Baie des Russes
 

An excursion combining history and wild landscapes.

 

Located on the mainland, opposite Nosy Be, Baie des Russes takes its name from an episode of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), when the Russian fleet stopped in the Ampasindava Bay region after circumnavigating Africa. A few remnants attributed to this presence can still be seen today, serving as a reminder of this historic event.

 

The bay captivates visitors with its unspoilt character: villages living mainly from fishing, long stretches of white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and coral formations close to the shore.

Whale and Whale Shark Safari
 

An encounter with Nosy Be’s marine megafauna.

 

From July to September, Ampasindava Bay, off the coast of Nosy Be, welcomes humpback whales that come to breed and give birth in its warm waters. This period offers ideal conditions for the respectful observation of these marine giants.

 

From October to around December, the region may also host whale sharks. These specialised excursions offer the opportunity to observe these impressive animals, depending on weather and sea conditions.

The presence of whale sharks varies from year to year and throughout the season. When they are not visible at the surface, excursions focus on the search for other marine megafauna. Depending on conditions and plankton concentrations, it may be possible to observe Omura’s whales, mobula rays, or manta rays swimming in the bay.
