Nosy Be
 

Nosy Be, a volcanic island of approximately 321 km², is located off the north-west coast of Madagascar, in Ampasindava Bay, around 8 kilometres from the mainland. It stretches approximately 26 kilometres from north to south and 20 kilometres from east to west. Nosy Be is the main island of an archipelago that includes Nosy Komba, Nosy Fanihy, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Iranja, and Nosy Tanikely, among others.

 

Meaning “big island” in Malagasy, Nosy Be is the largest island off the coast of Madagascar. Renowned for its rich natural environment and striking landscapes, it captivates visitors with its pristine beaches, lush vegetation, and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. Nicknamed the “Island of Perfumes” for its ylang-ylang and spice plantations, it has become Madagascar’s leading tourist destination.

 

The region enjoys a particularly pleasant tropical climate, with temperatures averaging around 25°C during the cooler season and 30°C in the warmer months. The dry season generally runs from April to November, while the rainy season, from December to March, is typically characterised by brief showers, often in the late afternoon, followed by largely sunny conditions.

 

Although the cyclone season in the Indian Ocean extends from January to March, Nosy Be remains relatively sheltered due to its geographical location, and cyclones are less frequent than in other parts of Madagascar.
